Plasma Arc
Waste to Energy projects using plasma arc technologoes have been gaining steam, pun intended. North American projects in St. Lucie County, Florida and Ottawa, Canada are two projects leading the way. Various providers of the technology are getting inquiries from all over the world.  In Japan, plasma torch technology has been commercialized.

Tepa Techologies / InEnTech Plasma Enhanced Melter (PEM) Demonstration plant Visits Cedar Rapids.

A one to two ton per day demonstration plant own by Tepa Technologies and built by Integrated Invironmental Technologies, LLC has been set up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at Landfill Site #1 of the Cedar Rapids - Linn County Solid Waste Agency. Tours have been made available as the plant dissociates demolition waste into syngas, power and slag. Cedar Rapids was the site of devastating floods in June of 2008 making this form of hazardous waste plentiful. The demonstration and testing of this equipment will allow the partnership of Tepa and InEnTech to learn more about the technology's capabilities. Here is a video of our visit.

How Plasma Arc Works

Plasma Arc technology and its use to convert municipal solid waste to energy has several variations based on the business models of suppliers of the technologies and the applications that fit the local waste stream.

This is a great primer on plasma treatment of solid waste. The paper is located on the How Stuff Works website: http://science.howstuffworks.com/plasma-converter3.htm.  If you click on some graphics on the website, some animation can be viewed.

Dr. Louis Circeo, Ph. D.

A leader in the development and researchof Plasma Arc Technology is Dr. Louis J. Circeo, Principal Research Scientist at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. (Dr. Circeo Bio) He has advised many groups, communities and companies as they have develop plasma arc components, infrastructure and projects. He has been a valuable resource for wastenotIOWA as we have researched this answer to landfill alternatives. Below is a link to a presentation Dr. Circeo developed to help explain plasma arc applications:
